Belvedere Castle

We’ve got the keys to the (newly restored) castle.

After a year-long project to restore and repair the historic Belvedere, visitors can once again appreciate sweeping views of the Park from its terraces and Castle.

First constructed more than 150 years ago, it’s no surprise that the Belvedere (Italian for “beautiful view”) needed some attention. Our work included restoring lost elements from the original design, replacing the windows with clear pane glass to evoke the Castle’s historic purpose as an open-air lookout tower, and installing a geothermal system that uses the temperature from the Earth to heat and cool the Castle.

Tips for visiting the Belvedere:

  • Head to Turtle Pond to see the full view of the Belvedere atop Vista Rock — its most majestic angle and a great photo op!
  • Start your adventure lost in the beauty of nature with a northward stroll through the Ramble. Bring binoculars for birdwatching as a bonus!
  • Beat the crowds by visiting the Belvedere first thing in the morning.
  • Stop by the visitor center to speak with Conservancy staff. Summer hours are 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
  • Take a staff-led tour to take in the sights and learn about the Belvedere (and its surrounding landscape). Kids love our Discovery Walks for Families — running every weekend!
