What happens once Central Park’s leaves fall? If you’ve been in the Park lately, you’ve experienced the beautiful fall foliage. After reaching peak color, deciduous trees shed their leaves in preparation for the approaching winter. Their job isn’t done yet, though. Raked leaves go to the Mount, the site of Central Park Conservancy’s composting operation. Once composted, fallen leaves are put back into the Park in the spring as mulch, enriching the soil of lawns, flower gardens, and newly planted trees. Conservancy staff gather up 10,000 cubic yards of fallen leaves from the Park’s 20,000 trees each year, creating 2,000 pounds of compost. They also mulch mow 250 acres of lawn multiple times throughout the fall season, returning those leaves directly to the Park’s landscapes and enriching the soil. Click here for more on why leaves fall and, if you have little ones, RSVP below for our Keeping It Green program and help keep the Park healthy by doing some raking of your own!
